Welcome to Quakers Kings Lynn
I come to Quakers each week out of curiosity and a desire to explore this wonderful universe we humans share with all life, all of which to me is sacred. I am excited every time I sit in silence as I never know what is going to happen and I am often initially puzzled or challenged by what comes to me!
Who are we and why do we meet?
The bedrock of the Quaker way is the silent meeting for worship. We seek a communal gathered stillness, where we can be open to inspiration from the Spirit of God. During our meetings for worship some may feel moved to speak: this is something anyone can do as all are considered equal.
We meet regularly at 10.30 on Sundays in the Friends Meeting House at 38 Bridge Street. All are welcome to join us.
We also have an on-line Zoom Meeting at 12.00 noon on Wednesdays. This is for anyone who would like to join and usually runs for 30 minutes. It is very informal and there is often a conversation afterwards, although sometimes not. It might be a good way to experience what Quakers in Kings Lynn do, it might be a way to attend if you are going to be busy at the weekend. Many of us find that time spent in stillness together is the perfect antidote to our modern, noise filled stressful lives.
Whichever kind of meeting suits you better, you will be very welcome to join us. For more details feel free to contact our Clerk. Address on our contact page
What do I do if I want to come to a meeting?
We meet every Sunday morning at 10.30 and we will be pleased to welcome you. If you haven’t been to a Quaker meeting before, you may feel more comfortable contacting us beforehand but this is not necessary. You can just walk into the meeting room and sit in any chair. The meeting usually lasts for an hour and then we have refreshments and a chance to chat. Children are welcome but because we are not running a regular children’s meeting at present, if you are bringing children, please do make contact in advance, if you can, so that we can provide for them appropriately.
What do Quakers believe?
Quakerism is a way of life rather than a set of beliefs. Quakers seek to experience God directly, within themselves and in their relationships with others and the world around them. These direct encounters with the Divine are where Quakers find meaning and purpose.
The Quaker way has its roots in Christianity and many Quakers find inspiration in the Bible and the life and teachings of Jesus. But we recognise that each of us needs to find our own way to talk about spiritual matters and it is not surprising if we don’t all use the same words or sources of inspiration. Quakers accept that openness to a uniting Spirit is available to all, and by sharing our experience we support each other on our spiritual journeys. Quakers also find meaning and value in the teachings of other faiths and acknowledge that ours is not the only way.
Where are we?
The Friends Meeting House is at 38 Bridge Street, King’s Lynn.
There have been Quakers in King’s Lynn since the 17th century. Our present building, dates from that time but was a pub back then!
